Your book was wonderful, I really enjoyed it, there was so much stuff in it that I didn't know about the Saddlebred Industry. There's so much history in it. Sarah Synder Harrison 10/29/16

Thank you, Heidi Madsen for compiling all this invaluable information and publishing this book Gaited In The Great Lakes. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about those I knew and also the history of those I had not known. Hopefully you will continue to write about our beloved Saddlebreds preserving their history and giving them the attention they so richly deserve. Keep up the Good work!

I hope you are having a great time with that great book of Saddlebred history you wrote , keep on doing a fantastic job. I hope someday somebody will write books about other great states like Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee and Georgia and will tell everyone the history of this great breed the American Saddlebred. Maybe mention all the trainers who helped make this breed great like you did, not only the famous trainers, but the small ones too, and Congratulations you did some great writing and research for your book.

Book Review #5 I recommend Heidi's book, it is a very informative well written book of our greatest love, The American Saddlebred. I did not recognize many of the names or barns and this enlightened me to the history we have lost. Of course their great asset is Dodge Stables and Wing Commander, but read the book, there is a great wealth of knowledge that went into this and I hope she picks up the other states and researches with more help from the residents... Thank You Heidi Madsen, and keep writing.

Heidi held nothing back in her findings of this full of knowledge book! Congratulations to her for taking the years to research and interview, investigate and combine such fulfilling American Saddlebred history. Her personal touch made you feel as if you could visualize different scenarios in the great state of Michigan. A personal friend of mine took such pride in her book and HE was there at Dodge Stables during all the Wing Commander years plus. Now Heidi has him as well as a friend and wealth of knowledge. Way to go Heidi. Now we all await a second book on more southern states and the history that surrounds the American Saddlebred horse!! BRAVO Heidi ! Lesley Miles/ Milestone Stables.

“Gated In the Great Lakes “, both books contain an extensive look at the horses, farms, trainers, and owners that show Michigan has produced champion quality American Saddlebred horses as well as top quality horse trainers.
I had the pleasure of working with Heidi, providing information concerning Howard Dickey Stables in Detroit. This was My grandfathers’ stables where he trained until, like other Michigan horse trainers, he moved to Kentucky. I often visited Doge Stables, in Kentucky, with my grandfather. Before reading these books, I did not know that Earl Teater trained in Michigan.
Based on the several weeks of correspondence between Heidi and myself, I can only imagine the amount of time and effort Heidi put into the production of these books. As the information, I supplied, was put into the article on Howard Dickey Stables, the drafts were sent to me to review for accuracy. Based on this, I am convinced that this process was used for each individual article in these books.
If the reader is interested in an accurate review of Michigan Saddlebred horses, past and present, these are the books to read.

I really enjoyed reading Gaited in the Great Lakes. I found it very informative, and I learned things I didn’t know about Dodge Stables and Wing Commander. Heidi has a great writing style, and the stories really held my interest. She also included wonderful photos.
I’m excited about reading her next book.

"Gaited in the Great Lakes" is Heidi Madsen's second book detailing the history of the American Saddlebred in Michigan. Heidi's love for the American Saddlebred is readily apparent as is her persistence and skill in investigative reporting. Although many previous Michigan saddle horse owners, breeders, and exhibitors have yet to be found, Heidi has demonstrated amazing talent in bringing back so much of a very eloquent time in saddle horse history. I thoroughly enjoyed reading every part of this book, looking at some of the most amazing pictures in saddle horse history, and learning how MIchigan horses continue as foundations in so many champion pedigrees today. As a native Michigander, I can attest to being a proud part of this amazing history. The past teaches us about the present while preparing us for the future!
